What to Look for in Mattresses and Bedding for Your Camp

Campers sitting around a fire

Are you preparing for your next influx of campers? Don’t let your camp mattresses and bedding be an afterthought. Get started early and know exactly what you are looking for before you purchase new mattresses.

But how do you know what you're looking for?

Are you just supposed to hunt down the old invoice from your previous purchase and buy the same thing you ordered last time? Don’t get us wrong, that does sound easy.

But... now that you think about it, the old mattresses didn't last quite as long as you had hoped, and they weren't easy to cle

an either. Actually, they didn’t really have the features you needed either. And that furniture took quite a beating.

Or maybe there are just some new features you’ve been looking for — things that weren't available the last time you purchased.

Starting to sound familiar? Then keep reading! We have dedicated our lives to knowing exactly what camp mattresses and furniture need to have — and we’re going to share it with you!

Compliance with Federal Flammability Standards

Never, never, NEVER use a mattress that does not comply with federal flammability standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Not only is it a safety risk for those sleeping on your beds but it also makes you liable if one of your campers ends up injured in a fire.

For this same reason, it's also not a good idea to buy used mattresses at your camp. While donated mattresses will save you money initially, it's not worth the risk. After all, you never know where those mattresses come from — or when they come from — and whether they are up to current safety standards. Not sure if your mattresses meet flammability standards? Send them to a lab for testing.

Kid-resistant Covers

When it comes to camp mattresses, durability is a major priority. That’s why we designed our nylon and vinyl covers to take durability to the next level. That’s right — they're waterproof! And we don’t have to tell you how valuable that feature is in a camp full of small bladders!

Additionally, with waterproof mattress covers, you don't have to worry about ruining the materials with too much water during the cleaning process. Ultimately, you can be pretty carefree with your approach to cleaning waterproof mattress covers.

Bed Bug Proof Design

Don't risk it. Bed bugs are the last thing you want to worry about when you have a camp full of kids. Bed bugs live in the seams and crevices of mattresses. But if a mattress is bed bug proof, that means it's designed in a way that gives bed bugs no place to go. The mattresses at American Bedding Manufacturers, Inc. feature inverted seam technology that accomplishes just that.

Guardrails

If you're running a camp, guardrails aren't optional — they're required. Make sure your camp bunk beds have guardrails so that they meet federal requirements. If they don't and someone gets hurt, you're liable.

The guardrails from American Bedding work with most angle-iron bunk beds and can be used to retrofit some existing bunks.
