Our Mattress Masterminds: Meet Joy Muir

Joy Muir, Shipping Manager at American BeddingJoy Muir's coworkers describe her as someone who is constantly helping other people — more so than anyone they've ever met.

In her position as shipping manager, Joy truly cares for the needs of others, particularly the customers of American Bedding. We are so grateful to have her on the team and to introduce her to those who do not have the privilege of working with her on a daily basis.

Meet Joy Muir...

Q & A with Joy

Describe a typical day as a shipping manager at American Bedding.

As shipping manager, I am responsible for typing all the bill of ladings and labels for each shipment. I also coordinate all the LTL (Less than Load) carriers to come in for pickup of each day’s shipments. If there are any containers coming in or going out, I work with the intermodal carriers to schedule those deliveries and pickups. I coordinate with the plant to make sure the product is ready and complete for shipment. If a container is coming in, I schedule that with our receiving team. I also assist Don Reynolds as many of his government projects require extra attention.

What series of events led you to your current position?

I began working for Dale Reynolds in 1999 as a secretary for his chemical company. We moved our offices to American Bedding’s facilities in 2002. As American Bedding grew, they needed someone to handle the shipping paperwork and coordinate with the freight companies for shipping and receiving.

What are the biggest challenges of your job?

Working in logistics means facing one problem after another. Whether it is late trucks, MIA drivers, or damaged freight, there is always a fire to fight. I enjoy working through each one until everyone involved is satisfied.

What drives you to do the work you do?

I love working with people. When, at the end of the day, I can see that all the shipments have been done and picked up. I match up the orders with the signed bills of lading and turn them over to Hali Reynolds for invoicing our customers.

In your own words, what makes American Bedding special?

The people I work with. These people are like my family. I have been working with them since 2002.

What is most important to you outside of work?

My family and my church are most important to me. I love being involved in my church with the nursery, choir, and teaching AWANA.

What do you like to do with your free time?

In my free time I like to visit family and help others.
